Nandina domestica Obsession™

Nandina domestica Obsession™, commonly known as Obsession™ Sacred Bamboo, is a compact, evergreen shrub prized for its vibrant red new foliage that transitions to a rich green as it matures. Unlike other Nandina varieties, Obsession™ retains its brilliant red tones throughout the growing season, offering year-round colour and interest. Growing to a height of 60–80 cm, it is ideal for borders, low hedges, ground cover, or as a feature plant in garden beds or containers.

Obsession™ thrives in full sun to partial shade, achieving its most vibrant colour in sunny locations. It prefers well-drained, fertile soil and adapts to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. Hardy and low-maintenance, it is drought-tolerant once established and frost-resistant, making it suitable for temperate and subtropical climates.

This slow to moderate-growing shrub reaches a mature height of 60–80 cm with a spread of about 60 cm, forming a dense, compact mound. Its brilliant red foliage and neat growth habit make it an excellent choice for creating colorful borders, low hedges, or as a striking feature in mixed plantings or pots.

Nandina domestica Obsession™ grows best in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Plant in spring or autumn, spacing plants about 50 cm apart for a seamless low hedge or ground cover. For container planting, use a high-quality potting mix and position the container in a sunny or semi-shaded location. Water thoroughly after planting, and mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Water regularly during the establishment phase, then reduce watering as Obsession™ is drought-tolerant once mature. Feed with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Prune lightly as needed to maintain its compact shape and remove any old or damaged leaves. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.
